1. Follow what it is you want in life for yourself, not just what others want for you

It is simply impossible to live a life completely uninfluenced by societal expectations. How much of our lives is decided by others? From choosing the university to study at or the major that would be optimal for us to make money, a lot of what we choose are actually projections of what society tells us to do.

In the long run, this means that you will hardly be able to be yourself and truly be happy as yourself. It’s not rare that we feel dissatisfied with the job that we have or the path that we take, because they aren’t truly us.

Don’t think that doing things for yourself is selfish. If you are true to yourself and be happy, there is no way the people who care about you will be displeased. So think about what is best for you, what you really want and act on it.

2. Write down the things you’ll need to get done tomorrow so you can rest for the evening

Have you ever gone to bed then tossed around listlessly worrying about what you have to do the next day? That happens to all of us. That task you have to do, or that email you have to send come morning keeps on popping up in your mind and you just cannot sleep.

Or when you are out on a date but your mind just can’t let go of that to-do list you need to get done at work. Which, in turn, ruins your entire night.

One thing you can do to stop your mind from getting stressed over these things is just to write down everything you need to do the night before. Before you go to bed, jot down all your worries and tasks you need done the next day. This way, your mind can be at peace at last.

3. Learn something new

Your brain is similar to a muscle — you need to use it or you lose it. According to Harvard Health Publishing: “Through research with mice and humans, scientists have found that brainy activities stimulate new connections between nerve cells and may even help the brain generate new cells”, which would help prevent future cell loss in your later years.

These “brainy activities” can mean puzzles or stimulating games. Or, easier yet, you can try learning something new. When you learn new things, your brain is constantly being refreshed and rewired but also the sense of achievement, optimism and distraction it creates will help you destress.

So if you are planning to pick up the guitar, or enroll in that Italian cooking class, you should definitely give them a go. Learning new things will not just help you strengthen your brain, but also bring in positive aspects to your life that will certainly benefit your mental wellbeing.

4. Do something that makes you truly happy at least once a day

There are days when nothing nice happens. But then there are days when you do one nice thing and it just makes the entire day. So, what if you just do one thing that makes you happy once a day?

It doesn’t have to be anything big, small things can bring happiness too. Like having that cup of coffee from your favorite coffee shop, or maybe, it’s the walk around the block with your little puppy.

And it doesn’t just be something you do for yourself as well. Random nice things done for people “just because” can also give you great satisfaction. Whether it’s buying your friends some delicious donuts or helping your little brother with his homework, good deeds done for people you care about without it being any special occasion or expectation of reciprocation can brighten up their day and yours.

5. Be kind and respectful to yourself.

You know what they say: “You are your worst critic”. There is no one else, other than yourself that judges you for saying that lame joke that no one laughed at. And there is no one else, other than yourself that loses sleep over a small mistake you made 10 years ago. Certainly your friends or anyone who cares about you would never do that. But you do.

The thing is that we are not as kind to ourselves as we do with our friends. We are extra picky and judgmental when it comes to our own errors. And the negative self-talk is only ever gonna do you more harm than good.

So, maybe try replacing the negative voices in your head with some positive self-talk. It will not be easy at first, but it’s worth a try. Start with the little things, like giving yourself a pat on the shoulder for something you did right. Spend time recognizing what’s so great about you. What are you proud of? What are you looking forward to? What makes you happy to be you?
