5 Signs You Are Burnt Out, Not Lazy…

How would you describe someone who is lazy? Is this someone that lies around all day, not wanting to do anything?

Does he or she get tired easily? While these behaviors are what you may often assign to a lazy person, they might as well be overlapped with symptoms of burnout.

The term “burnout” is a relatively new term, first coined in 1974 by Herbert Freudenberger, in his book, Burnout: The High Cost of High Achievement. He originally defined burnout as:

  • Burnout is a reaction to prolonged or chronic job stress and is characterized by three main dimensions: exhaustion, cynicism (less identification with the job), and feelings of reduced professional ability.
  • And as of 2010, a survey reported that approximately 75% of adults in the United States alone have experienced symptoms of burnout, with over 40% of cases being more severe (Korunka, Tement, Zdrehus & Borza, 2010).
  • With how hustle culture is taking over our lives as now, it’s important to educate ourselves of how burnout manifests itself, so we can be ready when it comes.

Here are 5 signs of burnout…You should know that and choose the best way to train your mind.

1. You feel disconnected from everything.

People suffering from burnout often experience a common sensation: alienation. This is described by the American Psychological Association as “persistent feeling of being detached from one’s self”. Which means they would feel a sense of numbness and detachment from themselves and their surroundings.

This leads the person to feel out of place at work because they emotionally distance themselves. They don’t feel like they are in control over their lives nor do they feel like engaging in anything.

2. You used to be motivated.

Do you feel like you have no motivation left in you? Burnout has a tendency of stealing any motivation you might have. Other ways this manifests? It may be harder to get going in the morning and more difficult to drag yourself into work every day.

Therefore, you might argue that a lazy person can be like that too. Laziness is a personality trait, but burnout is just a phase. After that, if you have always been a driven and self-motivated individual and this draining of spirit is only a new thing to you, then maybe you are burnout.

3. Cognitive Problems

Decrease in concentration is also cited as an effect of burnout. When we are stressed, we tend to focus on the negative element that we perceive as a threat. Which works great in the short term. But when we burn out, this narrow focus becomes a chronic problem and you are stressed all the time and cannot have difficulty paying attention to other things.

This can negatively affect your creativity, problem solving and decision making ability. You might find that you’re more forgetful and have a harder time remembering things.

4. You’ve become moody and irritable.

Do you often feel irritable for no reason? Do you find yourself unusually pessimistic? While negative emotions are not strangers to us all, it might be a bad sign if they become irregularly frequent for you.

Moodiness and irritability are common but often overlooked signs of burnout (Leiter, Bakker & Maslach, 2014). So it’s important to be aware of when your moods are out of control, and whether you’re burnt out, so you can make necessary adjustments.

5. You’ve neglected your self-care.

Due to prolonged fatigue and lack of motivation, people with burnout can start neglecting their self care. They would often engage in unhealthy coping strategies like drinking too much, smoking, eating too much junk food, not eating enough or not getting enough sleep.

They would also withdraw socially and spend most of their time by themselves as even the simplest task of socializing is draining for them. Dressing up to look presentable is not something they can effortlessly do anymore as well.
Isolation along with inner unwellness can lead burnt out people to seek comfort in alcohol or self medicated drugs like sleeping pills, which would just worsen their problems.
